SMU 100 – Fundamentals of Music
A study of the fundamentals of music, including clefs, notation, major and minor scales, time signatures, key signatures, rhythm, meter, phrasing, dynamics, terminology, intervals, tonal relationships, and sight singing I.

SMU 101 – An Overview of Sacred Music
A study of music including music in the worship service of yesterday and today, the introduction to hymnology, the analysis of the works of lyricists and song-writers of the present and past; and music in the scriptures.

SMU 102 – Music Theory I
Building on the fundamentals of music theory, including the introduction to modes, harmony, counterpoint, melodic dictation, the circle of fifths, and chords and their progressions

SMU 104 – Music Theory II
Advanced exploration of harmony, including advanced chords and their progressions, inversions, and analysis; along with advanced melodic dictation, harmonic dictation, advanced tonal relationships, pitch, intonation, and sight singing II

Development of aural perceptions in music, combining the effects of timbre, texture, rhythm, meter, linear organization, harmonic organization, and art form through listening to, and analyzing sacred music.

Analysis of the broad spectrum of musical art forms, including chant, classical, chamber music, country music, barbershop, bluegrass, silly songs, and sacred songs; interpretation and contributions made by music and musicians to society and culture; art forms which may be revived to influence all of us
